Meditation

The dawn is chilly as I take the first step outside. There is ice on top of all the cars, and a stillness to the moment that later hours cannot match. I’m thinking of a conversation I had with Tiina earlier, and almost walk into a truck.

I make it to my car without incident, and get the engine running. While it is warming up, I turn on the defrosters, the heater, and my seat warmer. I take off my coat. I hook my iPhone up to its charger and start the WAMU feed on CarPlay.

The sounds of Radiolab fill the car as I watch the ice melt.

I am going nowhere in particular. Just want to get some coffee and change my mind three times before finally settling on an iced vanilla oat milk macchiato at Dunkin.

The cashier smiles at me, as does the barista. They’ve seen me here before……..

I love their coffee and will travel to “the good Dunkin.” The one near my house doesn’t make the drinks right and I cannot even explain why they are inferior. I go to one in Pikesville closer to the freeway.

I walk in and he says, “I already start the espresso for you!”

It’s the little things in life.
