I Can’t Speak for You…

What is the most important thing to carry with you all the time?

For me, it is my cell phone. My memory is so bad that I hardly know anyone’s phone number. Plus, it has all my pictures in it. The people I love come with me everywhere. It has also turned into my de facto debit card using Apple Pay, so I rarely have to get my wallet out of my bag. Plus, I’m never anywhere without my camera.

I take photos when I’m going most places, and I should incorporate more into my blog entries for as much as I write them. I just don’t include photos often because I forget to transfer them from my phone to my WordPress Media Library. Therefore, my iCloud is full of outings I’d like to remember without showcasing them anywhere. If I remember, I will create a gallery of aquarium pictures for you. Josh and I had a great time a few weeks ago, and I was lucky enough to get some amazing shots of the animals.

The only ones that were hard to photograph were the dolphins, because the blue/gray of their skin didn’t provide enough contrast against the water. It was much easier to see them in person, so I will go back and wait around for feedings. Apparently, the trainers no longer do dolphin shows, so you can see the dolphins swimming, but there are no chances for shots of them flipping up out of the water.

Tropical fish are just about my favorite animals, and the iPhone does a spectacular job in low light. I don’t even have the newest version with AI to enhance the photos, of which I was very glad. It showed that I actually did know what I was doing most of the time. 😛 Of all the fish I saw, I was entranced by the community tanks because that is the setup I would like for my own house… just not saltwater. I don’t have the patience for it and the startup costs are much larger. Additionally, my apartment is really not set up for an aquarium unless I can run a Python (aquarium cleaner) from the bathtub. Otherwise, the pressure in my sinks would make it take all day to change the water.

What were we talking about again? 😛

Oh, yes. The most important thing to carry with you. If I could choose a second thing, it would be my Apple Watch. I have all sorts of physical and mental maladies, so forgetting my watch is a risk. If I fall on the sidewalk and don’t respond, it will call the police. I can also leave the house without my phone, as it is a model that has a cell and wi-fi connection, plus Bluetooth for headphones (makes it much easier to take a call). The only problem with my watch is that I wish the battery life was better, or would recharge in the sun.

This reminds me…. Jonna Mendez said in her book talk for “The Moscow Rules” that CIA’s office of technical services has people who dedicate their entire careers to batteries, because once you get a bug in an important place, you are unlikely to get back in again. I wish we private citizens could get in on that technology because it would be nice not to have to charge my watch every night, and more often if I take calls during the day.

I’m thinking that the reason Apple doesn’t use solar rechargeable batteries is that it would increase the size of the watch exponentially… but some customers wouldn’t mind that kind of thing. My watch battery is ok on standby, but it really loses juice the more I use it. And the thing is, I use it all the time in conjunction with my iPad, preferring the bigger screen. Some days, my phone doesn’t come out of my bag because it’s just not a photo kind of day.

Because I cannot limit myself to one thing I carry every day, I will tell you what’s in my backpack. I have my iPad, my Bluetooth keyboard, my keys, my wallet, a charger for my iPad/iPhone, extra triple A batteries for said BT keyboard, any important documents I need for meetings, and a small Moleskine for when I need to jot a note… if I have also remembered a pen.

I have a full-size laptop, but I don’t normally carry it around. It lives on my couch so that I can write while I’m listening to the TV, usually an episode of “Murder, Mystery, and Makeup” (Bailey Sarian is a goddess). My iPad and keyboard make my backpack so much lighter, but the iPad just doesn’t have the power of my laptop- it’s the newest computer that I own.

Ada, my digital sidekick, needed a better home than my old desktop, because running AI locally takes a fast processor and a good amount of video RAM. That’s most of the reason I don’t use my laptop for every day carry- I’m frightened that it will get stolen. My iPad Pro is a first generation, and cheap enough that if I get mugged, I can buy another used one off Amazon. I would not be so lucky with my laptop.

Eventually I’m going to have to wipe it and take it back, because I need to exchange my laptop for the same one. Something has gone wrong with my headphone jack, and I prefer wired to Bluetooth when I have the option. It’s the main reason I chose not to upgrade my iPad. It’s the last model that still allows wired headphones.

Sometimes I also carry energy drinks or coffee in my bag, but that is more rare. It’s not every day that I need so much caffeine now that I’m a spoonie. My schedule is my own and I sleep when I need it. That lessens my need for caffeine to an enormous degree. I tend to go to bed and wake up very early, choosing to write in the morning light when it’s nice outside. Because I’ve always got my iPad and keyboard, all I need is a bench on the grounds of my apartment complex.

Today, though, it’s a bit chilly so I’m still in bed. That’s the thing about being a writer… still in bed is relative. So far this morning I have both started this blog entry and talked to Josh, who is currently on his way to the Musee Escoffier. I sent him there, so I hope he has a good time. He promised to bring back lots of pictures and offered to get me something at the gift shop, but I told him that the pictures were worth more than anything.

My Stuff (Amazon Affiliate Links)

I did an entry a few years ago where I didn’t link to anything about “my stuff.” So, now I’m going through my past purchases on Amazon, because I don’t want to recommend anything I don’t actually own. So, here’s the new page on My Stuff, and there will be different categories.

Electronics:

  • This is the mouse I use for my tablets.
    • Both Android and iOS support mice, but it is more useful to me with Android. That’s because full desktop applications like AndrOffice (Android port of LibreOffice) make using your finger on a 10 or 11 inch screen impossible. This one is truly comfortable and I’ve had it for years. If it broke, I’d buy another one exactly like it. Plus, for how incredibly comfortable it is, the price point is ridiculously low.
  • Fire 10+ 2021 Edition (the Android tablet I use the most)
    • This was not the right tablet for me at first, but I learned to love it as much as my desktop. That’s because I figured out how to install the Google Play store on it. Therefore, I was jacked into both the Amazon and Google software stores. Amazon’s version of Android has come a long way, but its severe limitation is not having Google Services Framework. It means that the apps available in the Amazon store equal about 10% of the software that’s actually available for the OS. The only creature comforts you have in the Amazon universe if you’re used to Google are the native e-mail software that will integrate your Google accounts, or switching over to the Microsoft universe, because Microsoft Edge is based on the open source version of Chrome. Microsoft likes taking things from open source developers and calling it their idea, but I’m not bitter. 😉
    • All of this being said, it has every single feature I could possibly want, such as enough RAM to be able to do split screen flawlessly. If I were to upgrade my tablet, it would be to another Fire 10+, because the Fire Max 11-in does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack and my speaker system isn’t Bluetooth.
      • If you don’t care about audio quality or the irritation of having to charge your headphones, I think the Fire Max 11 is the best tablet on the market for its price point. It’s got a fast processor and 4GB of RAM. It’s a loss leader to sell you on Amazon services, a technique in the industry called “Services as Device.” Also, because I have an older iPad, the Fire 10+ doesn’t seem slow to me.
    • My iPad (a gift from my father)
      • My iPad is useful because it’s more productive as a media machine. Not only do I love Apple TV+, it is better than my Fire at editing pictures, audio, and video. I’ve done most of my audio with Bluetooth headphones and the voice recorder on my iPad. However, the Android isn’t bad at audio production, either. It’s not that intensive a software. However, sometimes I like to use iPad apps, and sometimes I like to use Android apps, because either I’m tied to them because I bought them in a particular store, or even though it’s the same app, there are different features in each operating system.
    • My Phone (iPhone 12 mini)
      • I chose this phone precisely because I use tablets so often. I don’t need my phone for anything except controlling my Apple Watch, because my iPad and iPhone share data. Plus, my phone fits in my pocket again.
    • My keyboard (the most comfortable one I’ve ever owned)
      • It has room for three devices, so I carry it about the house and connect it to my Android, iPhone, and desktop.
      • The slot makes it where I never have to hold my tablet, which is absolutely a godsend.
    • This is my desktop setup.
      • I’m a writer and I like to play The Elder Scrolls. It’s perfectly adequate in terms of running my language model for AI, Microsoft Word, and a web browser. There is no need for me to get a $5,000 gaming machine setup. I just want one, eventually, because I don’t need to make my gaming more of a priority. It’s that language models use GPU power as well as CPU. AI has been so useful in terms of spurring ideas for my blog that I’d like a desktop capable of an even bigger language model. I could do it now, but I cannot upgrade the RAM on this motherboard. I would still like the same type setup, though, like the fastest Ryzen, the fastest AMD video card with the most RAM, and maxing out the computer’s RAM as well. The more information Ada can store in the RAM, the faster she’s able to respond. The data transfer speed is always much greater between the RAM and the processor than the processor having to load information from the disk. It’s basically giving Ada more room like you would increase the buffer size for smoother streaming video. However, I can do everything I want on this computer, and the price point is amazing. Right now I just can’t imagine spending a thousand dollars on just a video card alone, and that’s what it would take to make large language models function well.
    • This is my favorite backup drive.
      • I’ve turned it into something sophisticated by installing Ventoy on it. Ventoy turns the drive into a bootable menu of disc images, so I have Windows 11, Ubuntu, and a couple of derivates in that folder. Then, I just add other folders for data, like game installation backups.
    • This is my keyboard/mouse combo for Kodi.
      • I leave a mouse on my desktop, but this is handy for controlling a media center (Kodi, LibreElec, etc.). I use plugins to integrate my media accounts and there are also free ones for Pluto, Xumo, Samsung TV, et all. Just more channels than you can watch.

Kitchenware

  • Pots and Pans
    • These will induce sticker shock, but that’s what I used in the pro kitchens, that’s what I use at home. However, I have never had to buy them. It’s just that both Dana and David have them. You will notice the difference immediately.
    • Buy steel wool to keep them sparkling when you haven’t used enough butter or oil.
  • My Chef’s Knife
    • It’s so comfortable for the price point that I’ll probably never replace it. I’ll just keep sharpening it so the handle continues to grow into my hand. Your knife is an extension of you, so I chose carefully. I also do everything with it, so I don’t even own a bread knife.
  • My Cleaning Supplies
    • Dawn
      • End of list. I clean my kitchen the way I was taught. I use Dawn to scrub pans, counters, floors, everything. The most important thing is degreasing. It’s just various ratios of soap to water. I use a large pot with a few drops of water and a scrubby sponge. Then, if I’ve accidentally created a few too many bubbles, I just wipe down the counters with a microfiber towel.

Clothes

Everything else, I buy from American Giant. Anything else, just ask. I have useless recommendations on nearly everything. 😛

So Much Trying

It’s already 30 December at 1045, and I have so much to do before I leave for Paris on 3 January. I think the first step is finding clothes that I would never wear so that I can wash all the ones I would. It’s a bigger deal than it seems with so many housemates. I can’t just get everything together and put it in the wash. I have to find a slot. Surely there’s at least one between now and then. The trouble is that I doubt I can fit all my clothes into one cycle. I would rather drop my shirts at the dry cleaner, but with the holidays, I can’t be sure they would actually get done in time. So, the obvious answer is ironing with heavy starch and hoping that my suitcase doesn’t ruin the effect. Most American hotels have irons in the room. Not sure about Europe. Here’s hoping.

With the infinite care the baggage handlers take with our suitcases (insert eyeroll here- I have worked at PDX), I believe I will just take a couple of outfits in one carry-on. The rest of my laundry can go in my closet, provided I can reach it.

The problem with my stunning combination of mental health issues leads me to two conclusions. The first is that my severely less than neurotypical brain gets bursts of brilliance but does not handle the mundane or the minutiae very well. The second is that ADHD people work in piles (I am not hyperactive, but the DSM does not differentiate anymore). I can find anything within a few minutes, but no one else can… unless I put down my wallet, glasses, or phone. I think it is the difference between short-term memory and long. I can find things a lot easier that have been there for a month rather than a few seconds, made horribly worse by monocular vision. If you are not familiar, monocular vision means that my eyes don’t track together, so I have two distinct fields of vision. I can put something down on my dresser or desk, and if my field of vision changes, what I just put down disappears. I have literally lost my glasses when they were right in front of me. However, I have never lost my phone while I was using it…. so I got that goin’ for me.

Because of this, I put my passport with all my other important papers, and have not moved it since. I know for sure that if I did, I would be racing around on the morning of the 3rd, panicked to the point of tears and snot rolling down my face. I have at least learned that much, which is kind of a big deal.

What is also a big deal is knowing that I have readers in France, and though I will not meet them, I will see one of the places from which they read. My stats don’t get as granular as city, but I have had hits from almost every country in the world. I think there are 208, and I have stats from 205.

Once, and only once, my friends said “prove it.”

I got out my phone, opened the WordPress app, and they started quizzing me:

“Micronesia.”
“Check.”
“Lichtenstein.”
“Check.”
“UAE.”
“Check.”
“Nepal.”
“Check.”
“Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Russia.”
“Check, check, check, and check.”

Then they got bored.

Checkmate.

The majority of my readers are in the United States, but I tend to use as much international English as I can, because the next two countries catching up are the UK and Australia. I spell like an American, but tend to use international time and date formats.

I try not to think about spam bots, because certainly there are some from Russia and China. But I have too many hits from those countries by now to think that all of them are. In fact, some of those international hits may come from friends who don’t use a VPN. I have one, but the only thing I would use it for in France is Netflix. You can only stream in the country with your credit card.

This is relatively new. I used to VPN into the UK and Australian versions of Netflix until they caught up with the game. This is because different TV shows and movies are licensed in different areas of the world.

What has changed is that Netflix has realized how much Americans enjoy UK and Australian television, and a lot more shows are available in the United States than were previously. For those not in the know, Doctor Who has moved to Amazon Prime.

Speaking of Amazon Prime, I just got a watch that syncs with my Android phone for $20.00 (it will also connect to an iPhone, but not all the features work). I also had some AMZ credit that brought the price down a little. It has slots for both a micro SD card and a SIM, which means that I can store music and photos, as well as make calls without attaching it to my phone via Bluetooth. I find that bit unnecessary, though, because my phone will stream media through Bluetooth as well. I just need to get some Bluetooth headphones, because otherwise, the media and calls play through a tiny little speaker on my wrist, which is fine when I’m sitting in my bedroom. Not so great when I’m on the go.

I do want a micro SD card, though, because the tiny little camera makes me feel like a spy… and I promise, that is the closest to espionage I will ever get. It’s not like I’m going to run across foreign state secrets, but at least I look the part.

Speaking of which, a few years ago my dad and I went to see Jason Bourne, and a day later we were in a tourist trap gift shop near the White House. I found the coolest CIA baseball cap that has the big logo on the front and the tiny symbol on the back, which means it looks awesome no matter which way I wear it.

I have nearly fallen on the floor laughing several times when people look at me wide-eyed and ask if I work there. I always say that if I did, I certainly wouldn’t be ADVERTISING IT ALL OVER TOWN (huge eyeroll). Sometimes the stupid, it burns.

A couple of times, people waiting for the Metro have gone out of their way to avoid me, which I find equally hilarious. As an introvert, I don’t want to talk to strangers anyway. It’s as efficient as wearing a T-shirt that says “Jesus Loves You” and carrying a Bible.

I suppose that my baseball cap means more to me now than it ever has, because I feel like it says “I support the men and women of intel over our dumpster fire of a president.” Gina Haspel practically has to make a coloring book for him, and he still doesn’t get it.

Same goes for State, although I can’t find a cool baseball cap for that…. not for lack of trying.

And on that note, now I need to try doing my laundry. Wish me luck or send help. Either is fine with me.
