Describe one habit that brings you joy.

My habit is to wake up in the morning and get on Duolingo immediately. I’m on a 99-day streak and doing well… although I’m really hard on myself when I miss a question. I hate when I see red in either Spanish or Finnish. But my love of learning them comes from two very different places.

I am originally from Texas, where I was surrounded by so many Latinx friends I struggled to understand. I chose Spanish as my second language in 10th grade to try and bridge the gap. The summer that school year ended, my father was transferred to a church in Sugar Land, Texas, which offered mission trips to Reynosa. It was then that I got my first taste of immersion, because even though I wasn’t an expert, I knew more Spanish than just about everyone else.

There was one other person who was relatively fluent, but he and I did not spend much time together. Therefore, I was the one that acted as translator for most of the other adults. It’s how I was chosen to preach the Sunday sermon for Vacation Bible School, though I didn’t know how to say much. That changed the more I visited, because I went to Reynosa during every break I was taking Spanish in class. The last trip was the most fun because my favorite phrase didn’t have to be “speak slower, please….” although I am now back to it because I’d forgotten just how fast Spanish speakers talk.

Luckily, Duolingo has a button to slow down playback or I would not have made it this far. I am also somewhat impressed with the AI, because I do not believe it should be used to create the lessons themselves, but it is helpful that by speaking into my microphone someone is listening to my pronunciation and will not pass me to the next level until it is correct.

Because being in Mexico was so much more beneficial than learning in class (and I assume, Duolingo), I hope to make it back sometime soon. Reynosa has changed drastically since the last time I was there, and though no one would remember me it feels somewhat like “going home for the weekend.” Ensenada would feel the same way, because I got to spend a week there in my younger years and still think about living there when I need to escape reality.

My journey with Finnish is a bit more roundabout.

I was emotionally abused as a kid by someone with a birthday complex. The house couldn’t be decorated for Christmas until her birthday was over, she claimed the entire month of December as her birthday, etc. So, when I realized that this friend couldn’t be in my life any longer, I wondered what I would do to celebrate that day instead- to make it feel like there was less of a hole in my heart. I got on the Google machine and looked up what other holidays were on that date, and Finnish Independence Day was available. I go nuts for it as a result, which is ridiculous because I didn’t have any Finnish family or friends at the time.

I still don’t, but that’s another story for another day.

Duolingo’s language capability is not as good in Finnish as it is in Spanish, but I stick with it even though there’s no AI for pronunciation. I find that being able to read in Finnish is impressive enough. I’m further ahead in my Spanish studies than Finnish, but I flip between the two often. They’re so different that you cannot mix them up. And in fact, the Finnish language is so hard to learn that even fluent speakers will commiserate with you.

One of the most exciting days I’ve had in recent memory was when I was having coffee with my friend Tiina. She put her mother on the phone for me and we spoke in Finnish for a few minutes. I’m sure I didn’t say anything earth shattering or clever, but it meant a lot to me to be understood in that language.

I don’t feel that type of excitement when speaking Spanish because it’s been a part of my life since I was a child, as native to me as English because Houston is full of Spanish-speakers. I have gotten to practice my Spanish hundreds of times with many different people.

I have spoken Finnish once.

I am sure that there are a lot of Finnish people that would say “once is enough” after they hear me.

But the title in both languages is “I Love to Learn.” That will never go away, so perhaps sticking with both is the answer. I am much more likely to run into a Spanish speaker in the US, but who knows where my travels will take me? I know I want to go to Helsinki because my heart bleeds “sinivalkoinen,” the blue of Finnish skies and the white of their snow.

I think that I would be just as at home there as I felt in Mexico because of this one joke:

How can you pick out the most extroverted Finn?
It’s the one who will look at your shoes when you talk to them.

So maybe I don’t have any Finnish blood, but I certainly have a Finnish personality at times. It’s a place to escape when the fiesta gets too loud.

Everyone Already Knows I Want to Go to Helsinki…

If you won two free plane tickets, where would you go?

Standing in Senate Square for the December 6th celebrations of Finnish Independence is my dream vacation, but I’ve written so much about it that I would like to change (flight) gears. I need to go to Portland, Oregon to get some work done on my book with Evan, but this is (I think) supposed to be about fun. I’m on a 91-day streak on Duolingo for Spanish, so I think I’d like to spend some time in Mexico brushing up. I used to be more conversational than I am now, and immersion is key. You begin to think in Spanish the longer it’s your only option to communicate. If I am in the US, I tend to nope out to English rather fast.

The best part would be if, by some miracle, Pati Jinich was there at the same time and I could wander the food landscape with her (as well as having someone to translate when my Spanish invariably gets me into trouble). We don’t really know each other- we’ve met once at the Mexican embassy when she gave a cooking demonstration in 2016. Her kissing me was a playful jab at my dad, because I told her the story of how my stepmother has always joked that Pati is my dad’s girlfriend. When he gave me the tickets to the cooking demonstration, I said, “careful, dad, I’m going to steal your girlfriend from you.”

I told her this story before the talk started, and I thought she’d forgotten. At the very end, she asked for a picture and planted a kiss on my head when the photographer said, “queso.” You can tell I did not expect it and the delight on my face is apparent. So, of course traveling through Mexico with Pati is not reality, just a dream that it would be cool.

We are already dreaming that I have won two plane tickets, so why wouldn’t I up the ante that Pati would agree to come on this wild goose chase for the best food in Mexico?

I would also like to buy more clothes in Mexico if Habana Banana still exists. It’s a clothing line I found in Ensenada years ago that has bright colors and adorable mascots. However, I have tried to find those clothes online and have reached a dead end, so I do not know if the shop is still open. It would be a kick to return to Ensenada just to go shopping.

It would also be a kick just to sit out at a cafe, drinking bottled Cokes and watching people. That’s the best part of traveling, in my opinion. I don’t like to go on massive sightseeing tours, I like to integrate myself into the local society just to see how other people live. I wish I could still do tequila and mescal tastings, but with my medication I would end up in pain. The headaches just aren’t worth it and everyone knows that Mexican Coke is superior to US Coke in every way, anyway.

I haven’t gotten to see as much of Mexico as I’d like. When I was nine my parents took me on a cruise that explored the Cancun area, and I’ve been to the aforementioned Ensenada. But I’d really like to go down into Oaxaca and explore the marvelous seafood dishes that don’t make it all the way to Texas unless the restaurant advertises Oaxacan food.

It would also be fun to make videos while I was there, walking and talking both in Spanish and English about what I see. I have never been to Mexico City, and my sister assures me it’s one of her favorite cities in the world. I think we would have a blast together, and she would be much easier to ask to come on vacation than Pati Jinich. ๐Ÿ˜›

91 days on Duolingo does not make me an expert, but I am getting more comfortable fitting back into the rhythm of Spanish after 30 years away. I took two years in high school and have been to Mexico several times while I was in class, reinforcing everything I’d learned to an enormous degree. But that was back when I was doing mission trips, so it wasn’t exactly “fun.” It was more about teaching or handing out food to locals. It’s unbelievable to me that when I was 16 I preached a Sunday sermon in Spanish and now I have trouble remembering the basics on a good day.

Speaking of which, I hear my Spanish lessons calling. If I don’t do them early in the morning, I get notifications all day that I am letting my friends down. Duolingo is singularly the most annoying app on my phone, so I try to get it out of the way as early as possible.

Maybe Pati Jinich will call while I’m studying. It’s as likely as me winning two tickets to anywhere.

Spanish and Sundry

What are you most excited about for the future?

I have finally reached a section of Duolingo that has vocabulary I haven’t studied and I’m on my own. It makes me excited for the future because I can’t skate by on 30 year old lessons in school. I am actually using the software to prepare me for trips to Mexico in the future- none of which are planned, by the way, but I have a better shot of going to Mexico than anywhere else. Granted, when I get there I will mostly be asking them why they don’t wear the green t-shirts and where the bank might be, but it’s a start. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Kidding, but not by much. I remember the first time I went to Mexico on a mission trip. My Spanish was equal to that of a Mexican toddler, but the people were so kind and corrected me with such love that it lit a fire in me to learn more. I learned that Sylvia and Hector were getting married, that Marta was building a new house, and that little kids don’t listen to me no matter what language I speak (I was on a trip to teach vacation Bible school). It was my turn to listen because I picked up more just soaking up conversation than I would have trying to talk. For instance, those are the real names of the people I met, stuck in my brain even though it is now over 30 years since the last time I went to Reynosa. There is just no substitution for immersion, so it’s time to start finding telenovelas on Pluto TV, or watching the news on Telemundo/Univision.

I had friend recommend “La Reina del Sur,” but I have already watched “Queen of the South” on Netflix. It would be a good brush-up to have a show with which I’m already familiar, but there are others I haven’t seen that might be better after I finish it. For instance, I have not seen the original “Yo Soy Betty, la Fea.” That’s “Ugly Betty” for you American viewers. I have found it on Peacock and Apple TV+ according to reddit, so I will be searching it out after I finish this blog entry.

Because I have an auditory processing disorder (comes free with neurodivergence), I like to have the subtitles on as I listen. People don’t have subtitles, but I need the extra help while I am learning.

There is a point to all of this. Many of the homeless people I have encountered, as well as the workers in my neighborhood, speak Spanish and their English is poor. Instead of making them learn English, I want to turn the view of Americans on its head. I’m perfectly willing to put myself out there, mostly because if I get a job in the future, I want to work at Home Depot.

That’s another thing I’m looking forward to in the future- discussing jobs I could do with my care team so that I am not reliant on SSI/SSDI unless I really want to be. I am eligible for both because I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when I was 18 mos old. I don’t regret the choices I’ve made in my life with my career, but it would have been nice to know that I could have gotten disability from the jump. The reason I didn’t know is that my mother hid all the paperwork I needed to file and my sister found them among her personal effects after she died, well into my late 30s.

My mental health is not helping the situation, so I am looking forward to working all of this out. I either have a journey into the workforce or a journey into the court system in which I’ll have to fight for my right not to party.

But there are things I can do on my own to further my education, and a second language has filled the hole in my heart at not being able to work in the immediate future. Right now, my job is to attend classes at Cognitive Behavioral Health and learn all I can when I’m not there.

I actually started with Finnish, but after a 43 day streak, I was hospitalized for my mental health. After I got out of the hospital, it had been just long enough since I’d studied that I don’t remember much. It seems like I forgot Finnish in “kaksitoista sekuntia,” or 12 seconds.

Duolingo is also not the best learning tool for Finnish, because it does not have the AI features that Swedish and Spanish do. Everything is done with the keyboard and reading, so you don’t get to practice by speaking out loud. The reason Swedish is important is that the cooking school I would like to attend next year is in a Swedish-speaking region of Finland, Vaasa. The school is called Vamia, and it was recommended to me by a YouTuber named Cyril:

At this point, I do not know if this school is right for me because the tuition is free, but living in Europe is not. I am saving my pennies and riding out the lease I have in the United States until November, and then I’ll decide what to do. I know I would like to go to Vaasa before I decide to move there, but even that is a stretch on my budget. I just have to hope that I will get more subscribers to both my Medium and WordPress blog, because every subscriber here adds to my ad revenue, and every reader on Medium adds to the income I get the longer you scroll through my drivel. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Culinary school would accomplish two things. The first is that I would like to work with Finnish YouTubers like Cyril to create a channel with Finnish content. I think I would be hilariously cranky like Anthony Bourdain, because that is my kitchen personality. The second is that I want to start a ministry for unhoused people that revolves around the kitchen, and I would be better equipped to do that having been trained as a chef and not merely the line cook I am now.

Traditional advice is to work in a kitchen before you go to culinary school to make sure you like it. I have 10 years under my belt, from dish to pantry to sautรฉ. I have worked every station and though I cannot say I am excellent at any of them, I know I will get better by hanging in at school. Plus, there are plenty of jobs I could do without learning Finnish until I’m ready, because most Finns speak English, especially in the hospitality industry. Vamia also instructs in English, with (I’m guessing) the requisite amount of French required.

In the meantime, I am looking forward to all the nonprofit ideas I have coming to fruition. I have to have a Plan B in case going to school in Europe is not feasible… and it’s probably not, to be perfectly honest. I want to go more than anything, but again, it’s going to take a lot of money I don’t have yet. But that’s the thing about dreams. When other people know you want something, they are willing to help. For instance, my readers showing up every day. Each little bit helps.

If I stay in the Baltimore area, my idea is to create a nonprofit called “The Sinners’ Table.” It centers around accepting all the people that society rejects, giving them a fine dining experience they could never afford on their own. I am doing the hard work of identifying stakeholders and writing a business plan, because that is something I can do in my spare time while I am waiting to see what is going to happen with my job and school aspirations. If other people have to run it because I am not eligible for a job, I will be able to volunteer.

But why Finland in the meantime?

I would only have to worry about my living expenses and not the fabulously high cost of tuition. Any Le Cordon Bleu institution in the United States would bankrupt me quickly, while I can find housing for the rough cost of living in DC or Baltimore. Some things would be more expensive, like clothing (I’m not skimping out on cold weather gear), but an apartment is roughly the same. The biggest cost to my family would be me being so far away that it’s hard to visit. However, culinary school does not last that long. If I like Finland so much that I want to stay and get permanent residency or citizenship, that’s a bridge I’ll cross when I come to it. I don’t get to see my family that much as it stands now, because they’re all in Texas…. far away from the current flooding, I might add.

My biggest problem is that I am an idealist who doesn’t necessarily know how to break down large ideas into small steps for execution. I generally work best in a team for that, and I’m lucky to have one under me now. I have gathered the best and the brightest at Lanagan Media Group, most of whom went to high school with me at High School for Performing and Visual Arts. Instead of using AI, I get immediate feedback from an arts brain trust.

Because make no mistake, cooking is art in any language.

And in the United States, the language in the kitchen is overwhelmingly Spanish. I want to be able to speak to my employees in whatever language they feel the most comfortable. Therefore, Finnish can wait.

But not for long.

I am on the Rainbow Railroad, and I am taking a stand against fascism. Jesus’s first lesson was to walk away from people who do not support you. Jesus’s second lesson was not to take any shit. My boundary is that I don’t want to live in the United States, because other countries have state appointed religions that are less conservative than this. I am finished fighting and have started thinking in Finnish.

Duolingo is so petty.

Petty. Just petty.

I like the idea of moving to Finland because supporting myself as a culinary student is possible. It is achievable by next May or September, thus skirting the “I’ve only been taking Suomi for 30 days” conundrum. Finnish is like chess. You learn the skeleton in a few months, but as to when you’re fluent? Some Finns will just give you a dumb look and say, “never.” The coffee helps. Listen to Finnish and you’ll know why. It takes half a pot before you sit at the keyboard, and I assure you a problem exists between keyboard and chair (PEBKAC if you haven’t been on the Internet since Jesus was born….. “ID10T” is also useful.).

I am more interesting the longer I go on. I’m not kidding. This is what I think when I read… that the author doesn’t hit their stride until they’ve started the faucet. Sometimes my friends are frustrated I can’t stop up the drain, so you get my brain droppings instead.

What were your parents doing at your age?

I have monetized WordPress for all my writers, and we’re discussing how to profit-share. My two ideas are to pay out their money as it comes in, or if they’ll let me have their money while we’re still making pennies, then I will pay them in technology. A lot of my writers are as poor as me, so Aaron, Bryn, and I all need Macs. I now worship at the church of Steve for two reasons:

  • I speak Finnish now. Finnish is cool.
    • I’m on about Day 22, and I have busted my ass to the tune of being at the top of the sapphire league and the February challenge is already done. I am also not ready to live out my life in the United States at this point and deserve a Finnish passport. I came out as nonbinary and then found out it falls under the trans umbrella. I cannot change my gender on my passport from F to X and that is not acceptable to me. I am freaking out with PTSD because of it, thus learning the hardest language in the world. Macs are the only desktops that have long press on keys so that tama becomes tuo. It’s not this, it’s that. “This” is tamรค, “that” is tuo. The title is “Letting Go in Finland is Easy, Because It’s Already Frozen.” I used Google translate because I don’t want to have to type all those special characters and it’s day 22.

How are you going to deal with all that snow and ice?

Like everyone else. You plan. I have synthetic Reebok long johns and UltraTech from Uniqlo as well. If I need it, I will upgrade to Merino wool. I just want to get to Finland first before I bite the bullet. Clothes for that climate aren’t cheap, and you pay it. If necessary, I will get animal furs for my shell, but I have a great midweight from Uniqlo as well. My shell depends on how cold it is. In Finland, I might be able to find a good synthetic, but if not, I have no qualms about buying animal skins for that climate. There’s a time and place for it. I don’t take any crap. I am doing synthetics first, therefore I am giving my best effort to be kind to animals. Please do not think I am cruel to animals when it is 30 below.

I am sure that Aleksi, Dave, Cat, Carola, Phillipa, and Cyril will have lots of tips. I just bought a subscription to Aleksi because if you pay money you can talk to him. I want to do the same for Dave, because I don’t think Cyril has enough fans yet to be monetized. He deserves it, though. That’s because his videos are sometimes informational about Vami (it’s a vocational school, which is where I’m interested in hotel and restaurant management. It’s in Vaasa, which is why I’m also on day one of Swedish. I haven’t stuck with it as of yet, because when you choose a language, you stick with it. If I had started Swedish first, I would have stuck with it because the language support is better on Duolingo (it has an AI that can judge your pronunciation. Finnish don’t.). That being said, Swedish is useless for anything but the YKI-testi. Something like 93% speak Finnish, and Swedish being an official language is a throwback because Finland used to belong to the Kingdom of Sweden. Also, it’s cold. But I work on the Internet. Realistically, how much time am I going to spend in the snow vs. watching it?

How are you going to deal with the dark?

I don’t know, but Portland prepared me pretty well. The climate is not all that different from Portland in terms of the sky. It’s dark in the middle of the day in Portland, too. Rain, etc. Katya (my closest Finnish friend) says that I will not understand how dramatically dark it gets until I get there. I’m planning a trip soon to scout out schools in Tampere, Helsinki, and Vaasa. Since culinary school will be a lot of walking, again, I don’t care. You are fabulously warm when you create the proper microclimate, and when it gets REALLY cold, they have the same American hand warmers that we do. I put one in my jacket pocket to absorb into my coat, and I’d be fine in very cold weather. The Finns don’t have to teach you how to get used to the cold. They have to teach you how to layer so that inside your clothes, it’s in the 70s.

They can make you warm enough to faint, as I often do if I’m wearing my winter gear inside.

Why do you want to move across the world? Why Finland and not Mexico since you already speak a little Spanish and it’s a romance language, which is like a hundred times easier?

You have to learn Finnish in a lake so no one can see you cry. I stole that line, but I feel attacked. Yet there is something about Finland that drives me crazy, and that’s the wanderlust to be outside in the summer again without having to revisit the trauma of Portland. I also don’t like it when it’s 110 degrees in the summer. The thing I liked about Portland was that it was tolerable inside the house most days. In Portland, only new construction has air conditioning and you live in one room in the summer- because generally you can only afford one window box if you insist on being a cook. You don’t become a cook if you can do anything else. The neurotypical workflow of an office drives me batshit insane, so I want to learn Finnish cuisine as I’m building LMG. Hopefully, by the time I graduate I’ll be able to support myself on American money…. which I need a lot of in order to qualify for a visa.

Paolo the Accountant says I don’t have enough money to go to Europe and even that doesn’t daunt me. This is because America never gave me a choice. I am begging for money from the whole world and it makes me ashamed because I hate asking for help when it’s a gift I cannot possibly pay back.

But what I need you to know is that I’m The Doctor, and I’m at my last regeneration. I need you to let me have them infinitely.

What were my parents doing at my age?

Living the American dream that I’ll never have due to the United States’ dedication to the idea that I’m not a person. I’m even approachable by foreign intelligence agencies because even though I’ve dated an American intelligence officer, I don’t know anything. I just mean that it would be fun to work for the Finns in intelligence, like a translator or in the mailroom. Being fluent in Finnish doesn’t come all at once, but I’m working as hard as I can. It will take about four years to be fluent, and all of my Facebook groups in Finland will back me up on that. One of the huge problems with Finnish is that I cannot really practice until I get there. The way people speak Finnish and the way they write it is often very different.

I said “kippis” to Katya one day, meaning “have a good day, cheers.” She said that’s for shots. Of course it is.

Katya reached out to me a propos of nothing. My love of Finland is encapsulated in her because we are not romantic partners. She’s kind of my grandma, kind of my mom, kind of Supergrover, kind of Bryn. It would make me happy for us to be neighbors, because older people are lonely…. in Baltimore and in Finland.

I actually am involved with someone casually, but we are planning a future together. He is not opposed to living anywhere in Finland because he’s in Minneapolis currently. We need a vacation in Helsinki for him to warm up this time of year…. He’s also given me fantastic advice on caring for my outer shell (wool sweater and waterproof pants). That the fibers in wool can be tightened and softened with… wait for it… hair conditioner. Of course it can. It’s always something simple and hair tracks.

Aaron is quite a bit younger than me, but it’s not a case of that kind of attraction. He’s adorable, but that’s not what drew me to him. He’s a Lutheran (Missouri Synod) preacher’s kid and an atheist who believes in the same kind of social justice that I do. I’m the Rowan Williams to his Christopher Hitchens. I know Hitch is dead, but Aaron’s smarter. He doesn’t have to work very hard to impress me. He’s been to seminary (didn’t graduate) and I haven’t. Therefore, he was able to tell me what books to read to learn about Jesus, because he was indeed a real person.

At that point, if the virgin birth and the resurrection never happened, does that negate what he taught?

It does to Evangelicals, because they don’t study what he taught, anyway.

Luckily, my dad is not one of them, but at my age he transitioned from being a United Methodist minister to a medical assistant to my stepmother; so did I, in a sense. I am ordained now in the Church of the Latter Day Dude. I was just the go-to for everything as a kid, my dad’s Girl Friday.

As his American dream came together, mine fell apart. I folded at Matthew Shepard’s death, September 11th, January 6th, and now we’ve been taken over by a South African dictator.

There and Back Again, Day Two: Bingenheimer Ried / Alkmaar

(September 12, 2023: Echzell, Hesse, Germany to Alkmaar, Noord-Holland, Netherlands)

I packed up my things long before dawn. By four-thirty, I was on the S-Bahn into Frankfurt, and by six, I was on a different S-Bahn train headed north into the Hessian countryside. Dawn began to break as I waited for yet another transfer at Friedberg, with enough time to grab a quick breakfast at the station Bรคckerei. By seven-thirty, I’d made my destination, a single platform station in butt-ass-nowhere, called Reichelsheim (Wetterau), a tidy collection of brick houses, and a few slightly newer modern-ish box homes clustered around a REWE supermarket, a smaller Netto Marken-Discount, and damn near nothing else.

It’s the kind of place that would have a Chicken Express, an A&W/Dairy Queen, and fifteen churches if it were in Texas, but this definitely wasn’t Texas. No live oaks whatsoever, instead, the forested Taunus Mountains remained visible on the far side of Friedberg well to the west, and the landscape immediately leaving town opens up into green, gently rolling farmland.

A footpath northeastbound follows the S-Bahn track toward a depression in the north, a wetland complex called Bingenheimer Ried. Before even leaving town, Graylag Geese (Graugans), svelte and free-flying unlike the tubby domestic monstrosities we see in America, honked overhead, joined by other waterfowl – including, to my amusement, introduced Canada Geese (Kanadagans) and Egyptian Geese (Nilgans) which are familiar from my travels in America.

A low, artificial rise adjacent to a tool shed gave me my first good look over the wetlands, and also revealed a decent-sized observation tower to the north. While Enkheimer Ried had been nice and productive, there was no birding-specific infrastructure there, whereas there were clearly purpose-built observation decks at Bingenheimer Ried. Maybe if I was lucky, there’d be other birders present, hopefully not too many, though.

Rare birds can draw in surprising crowds: in America, the first chaseable Spotted Rail drew in dozens, if not hundreds of birders to Choke Canyon Park, tucked away in the whole-lotta-nothing between Corpus Christi and San Antonio. A whole peninsula lined with telescopes and long-lens cameras, all looking for one ungainly, if striking waterbird that had strayed there from Central America. In Britain and Japan, I’ve seen social media photos with huge groups all straining to photograph a single stray from America.

Here, there was a continuing record of a shorebird that would have made more sense to see along the Caspian Sea than a Hessian wetland: a Black-winged Pratincole, with a real doozy of a name in German: Schwarzflรผgelbrachschwalbe … YIKES! Pratincoles are much less well known than sandpipers or plovers since they don’t range in America at all, but they’re streamlined open-country birds (“shorebirds” being a generalized term referring to a group of related birds rather than an absolute label of behavior or habitat) which feed aerially on insects.

Given that my itinerary wasn’t intended to take me remotely close to the Caspian, I had to give this one a try.

I stroll over to the wooden observation tower, and there are a few people already there but it’s not crowded at all. The telescopes are out, which is good because the main wetland is a good hundred yards out.

Even with eight-power binoculars, it’s easy to see why this place is a birder’s dream. White Stork (helpfully, WeiรŸstorch) forage in the shallows. Wheeling flocks of black-and-white Northern Lapwings (Kiebitz) distract us from time to time with their chatter (ah, yes, kibitzing). Any number of marsh birds and songbirds and crows and the occasional raptor. Still, not yet The Bird.

At some point, they asked where I parked my car. “Oh, I took the train from Frankfurt.” It takes about an hour before they are like, oh, you’re not an immigrant living in Frankfurt who’s so acclimated you’re a birder. I switch to English. “Nope, just landed here from Texas yesterday.” I switched briefly to my first ex-family’s Wichita Falls drawl for comedic effect, and, well, I’m Filipino, so hearing the Hank Hill Voice coming out of my mouth is nearly as much vocal dissonance as, well, me speaking German. Mirthful laughter and I’m a stranger no more.

Turns out at least one of them had been to Texas to see Whooping Cranes, as I have in years past! Birders will be birders: we are a tribe that transcends national origin and common language, and we chase the same legends and listen to the same grapevine. I’d gotten my info from a German living in Belgium before double-checking on eBird. (Note: we’ll get to Dirk in a couple days. He’s awesome.)

Fifty-odd species later (and I’d like to note that this would be a really great list for a single location in Texas, which is right there with California in “you are a spoiled dadgum birder” terms), and we’re still scanning, and it’s getting close to nine and I really need to start considering heading back to the train, rarity or not, if I’m going to make it to my next hostel by nightfall.

Cause this is a side trip, folks. This wasn’t even part of The Itinerary, this was a target of opportunity. And right about when I thought my window was closing, There It Was.

Black wings. Forked tail. Black necklace. Too streamlined for a plover, too chunky to be a tern, sitting pretty on a sandbar. The Schwarzflรผgelbrachschwalbe (and, nobody was yelling this word like the KRANKENWAGEN meme because not even the Germans were going to consider that) was ours, with high-fives and smiles all around. No, I would not have to save this bird for some far-future pie-in-the-sky trip along the Silk Road. Mind you, I do want to visit the Silk Road, but that’s realistically not happening on a social services coordinator budget.

Well, not like this was realistic on non-profit salary either, and yet here I was, in the middle of a bunch of German birders, celebrating a life bird that makes literally zero sense for an Austinite to expect before retirement age.

Too soon, I had to take my leave, because I had a full birding day booked for the very next day … nearly three hundred miles northwest. And I wasn’t flying.

You see, today wasn’t originally intended to be a birding day, this was a transit day and I’d added two more steps to my whirlwind.

From Reichenheim (Wetterau), S-Bahn local train to Friedberg. Switch onto the S-Bahn back to Frankfurt (Main) central station. And then it would be time to switch to a train towards Dรผsseldorf, but for a transfer coming in Cologne (Kรถln).

The original plan had been to take slower trains along the Rhine Valley and check out the Lorelei, that fabled hill upon the Rhine below which the mermaids would lure travelers to some romantically dreadful fate, but there was absolutely no time for that now that I’d burned that on getting a much larger net haul of bird species off the beaten path. Nope, it was time to switch to an ICE train …

And by eleven, that very ICE train was now on the tracks between the Frankfurt main station and airport stops, doing absolutely nothing for half an hour. Finally, an appropriately snarky voice came over the PA, first in German, then in English, both with the same tired, passive-aggressive vocal affect. The other passengers started chuckling.

“Welcome to the ICE train to Dรผsseldorf. We will be forty-five minutes late to Kรถln, and we will not be stopping in Dรผsseldorf. Thank you for riding Deutsche Bahn.”

German. Efficiency. The conductor’s irritation was palpable. Evidently, my rides on the local S-Bahn trains, five in a row all on time without incident, were an utter anomaly, and this was closer to the expectation. No matter, because it makes little sense to worry about what is out of my control, and when in doubt, you pivot!

It wasn’t long before we got rolling, and not much longer beyond that we were screaming through the foothills of the Taunus at 150mph. Now we’re cooking. Forests and farms and the occasional town out the windows, my lifer Red Kite (Rotmilan) seen soaring high overhead (birding from high-speed trains being a skill I learned was indeed feasible on multiple trips along the even faster Tokaido and San’yo Shinkansen lines).

Before too long, the train slowed and farmland gave way to urbanity again, and the spire of Cologne Cathedral loomed across the river. There was my transfer, half an hour before my next ICE train, enough time to check out the cathedral and grab a currywurst,

Just then, a pretty young lady started speaking to me in English. I was caught off guard, so I instinctively replied in English – and immediately realized my mistake. She started in on her sob story about how she was from Afghanistan and needed money and I immediately just walked off because I needed a restroom, I needed some currywurst, and I absolutely did not have time for panhandlers and pickpockets and hell no, not gonna be a mark today.

This may sound callous, but let’s be real: solo travelers abroad are targets, especially Americans, because, whether or not you think you have money (and by American standards, I don’t), you still look like you have money. Even being a paycheck-to-paycheck American means you are a one-percenter by most standards.

Fortunately, I know exactly where to go. Polizei. Duh.

I wasn’t going to trouble myself by turning her in, obviously, because, for all I knew, she was really in need, but she wasn’t going to press the matter in front of the cops, and if she had any accomplices, they would be wise to disappear right the hell then.

More to the point, I didn’t have the damn time, because my bladder was going to bust. Nice coincidence, there’s the bathroom, right next to the Polizei, time to get a euro coin (blargh), and oh hey, currywurst at Le Crobag, let’s effing go.

I was so hypervigilant getting to that Amsterdam ICE train that I failed to get decent shots of the cathedral and I didn’t even remember to tuck into my currywurst until my train was nearly halfway to the Dutch border, sailing through Monchengladbach. The sandwich was still pristine. European breads are wizardry.

The countryside gets progressively flatter as you transition from Germany to the Netherlands, hammering home why people call Benelux “the Low Countries”. It can’t be overstated: the flatness of the Netherlands makes Texas look positively Himalayan. What the Netherlands lacks in topography, though, it more than makes up for in both rural charisma and, weirdly enough, urban squalor.

The ICE train announcement as you reach Utrecht is particularly dire. “Please be aware of pickpockets at all times, there is high pickpocket activity in Utrecht and Amsterdam.” Really, that would have been friendly to mention before, I dunno, COLOGNE? Eindhoven seemed clean and modern enough, but Amsterdam-Zentraal, our next transfer, was …

… yeah, we weren’t going to actually be staying in Amsterdam on this trip, because we still had more train travel to go.

Fortunately for my purposes, the warm cloudy day had become a blustery, rainy afternoon, and the transfer to the local Dutch train was rather uneventful except that I had managed to catch the commuter train with all the students on board going home for the evening.

Now. I can get by in German, and I’m a native speaker of American English. Logically, the Netherlands being geographically and linguistically between these two countries, I should be fine with Dutch, right And you would be absolutely wrong because Dutch is as incomprehensible to me as Quenya or Simlish. You’d conversely maybe think I’d find it awkward and strange, but actually, no, Dutch is a complete and utter delight to listen to.

If there was one word to describe it?

Lekker. The Dutch language is totally lekker.

I’m not being sarcastic: this was literally the word I heard the most on that train ride toward Den Helder.

Also: these folks hold on to their terminal Rs like they’re life preservers in the North Sea, for some reason the Amsterdam dialect sounds almost exactly like a Texas drawl, and I’ll be damned if “valley girl affect” isn’t the goddamn same in Dutch as it is in English.

(In completely unrelated news, if any of you knows or is a polyamorous Dutch girl and happens to be even remotely interested in dating a slightly over-the-hill but adventurous and affectionate non-binary Filipino-American …)

It was stormy by the time I got to Alkmaar, but still early enough (mid-afternoon) that I had time to explore a bit after checking into the hostel.

Alkmaar is sort of a mini-Amsterdam, a canal city with houseboats, but without the urban blight and overcrowding. Instead: a quaint square with the largest cheese market in all of the Netherlands. It looks like a church spire, but I promise you, that is a shrine to cheese. This should be terrifying to me, since I’m lactose intolerant, except that not once in Europe was this ever a problem. A mystery for the ages. (And thankfully not a reenacted movie scene across the table from Kevin Kline!) Across the canal, there was a friendly dude hawking stoofvlees, an irresistible (and actually Flemish) concoction of rich beef stew over fried potatoes, something like an Old World cousin of poutine.

(I still have dreams about all this food a year later.)

The storms had receded into herringbone clouds, and the sun peeked through again as I enjoyed dinner in Alkmaar. Black-headed Gulls (kokmeeuw) wheeled overhead waiting for pedestrians to drop tasty morsels; a wild-coiffured Great Crested Grebe (grote kuiffuut) bobbed in the water looking like the bird equivalent of a System of a Down roadie.

Tomorrow would be a whole day of birding, and all I had to do was check in …

And I returned to the hostel to find a rather snotty young Australian woman in yoga pants at the desk screaming. Evidently she’d self-extended her stay without telling anyone and so my stuff was now strewn outside the room, and her stuff was all over the fucking place and she had evidently thrown a completely shitfit which the flustered hostel manager was trying desperately to manage. After she calmed down, presumably unwadded her pantaloons, and vacated, the manager got me my own room for being so polite and patient and for helping him calm down. (I’m ex-Disney. I know this shit happens, and I know how hard it is to stay professional when it does.)

And look, people have bad days, even when they’re supposed to be having the time of their lives. It’s not a national thing, a cultural thing, or a gendered thing. I’ve had remarkably bad days, in public, during travel, with others around to hold the receipts. So, I’m not going to blame her either. I hope her yoga got her to a better headspace that day.

As for the receptionist, I noticed he was also serving as a barista. A real Dutch coffee, please. (Every country does better coffee than America, I swear.) Over that much-better-coffee-than-Starbucks, I take the opportunity to ask the receptionist-slash-barista what his real opinions about Americans are, and he levels with me that, nowadays, the “ugly Americans” don’t leave their country, and it’s actually the Aussies and Kiwis out of the English-speakers who cause trouble (this earned an eyebrow, but I was frankly thinking this was recency bias), but not even a fraction of the trouble of Mainlander Chinese who don’t queue up, never learn local languages, leave trash everywhere …

Y’all, I’m fully a quarter Fujianese by DNA — that fraction of my ancestors lived in the kind of circular fortress-towns you’d half-expect to see in a wuxia film or a Mulan remake.

But also, from Kyoto to San Antonio, I can kinda personally vouch, because the Venn diagram of “coming from a culture that considers itself the center of the world” plus “nouveau riche with no fucking manners” is going to suck no matter what ethnicity or nationality that Venn diagram comes from, and Mainland China is precisely where that junction of recently prosperous, deeply self-centered people with no common sense is on the ascendant right now.

Dude was also keenly observant on the other point: the stereotypical Ugly Americans would never leave their homes nowadays because they’re too busy believing what they’re told, that everywhere else is a shithole. Or, in the words of a particularly toxic influence long since yeeted from my life: “Why would you ever leave America when everything you could ever want is already here?” (Yeah, double middle-fingers to that person. Not one bit sorry.)

More world for me to enjoy, anyhow.

I gave myself time afterward to really enjoy a quiet evening in Alkmaar, because tomorrow would be a very busy, all-day birding trip to the North Sea island of Texel, and this was perfect — I certainly didn’t feel overwhelmed like I would have in Amsterdam. I walked past a Hawaii Restaurant whose menu was zero percent Hawaii, but those burgers would’ve been great if I wasn’t literally from where burgers are like The Most Basic Restaurant Food. So I ended up with spareribs (helpfully labeled “spareribs“, with a choice of “traditioneel” or “spicy“) at a place called De Waag (because it’s the Netherlands and their double vowels deserve at least half a dozen appearances in this blog entry), and then got myself a pretty good night’s sleep in anticipation of another early morning.

All in all, a very unexpected and high-productive side-trip, a damn-near u-turn, and my second new country in as many days. Right on.

There and Back Again, Day One: Enkheimer Ried

(September 11, 2023: Frankfurt am Main)

It only takes a few minutes on the increasingly crowded S-Bahn to get from Gateway Gardens to the Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof, as the woods around the airport give way quickly to suburbs, then you cross the river Main and you are surrounded by all the accoutrements of big European cities — the old European architecture mashed in with tall glass skyscrapers, railyards full of graffiti, lots and lots of little Achtung! signs warning of rail hazards, and then you have arrived at your rail hub, tons and tons of people going to and fro and much more racially diverse than some people in the States (who have never set foot here) would have you believe.

I peeked out a bit to get my bearings, but my goal for the day wasn’t the city center, but a transfer to the U-Bahn, and thence to the eastern suburb of Bergen-Enkheim.

I love public transit so much. Even the single train line at home in Austin means I get to skip out on 45 minutes of stressful freeway gridlock, and I don’t mind the additional walking from station to work because it means I don’t have to set aside extra time for the equivalent amount of exercise. Gyms bore me; long walks don’t, especially when there are flowers to photograph for iNaturalist, public art to go on Instagram, and joggers and cyclists to greet.

Extra points, though, when that long walk gives you time to acclimate to entirely new surroundings across the ocean.

The moment I stepped out of the train and started eastbound on a street called Leuchte, I knew damn well this was Texas. Business with names like “Best Dรถneria” and “China-Thai-Snack”, tucked into quaint, freshly-painted buildings that nevertheless feel like they were surely there before Texas was a republic. While not as vertical as Japan, the residential zones here are still much more communal than in America; no single-story homes, but three or four-story buildings with small, immaculately manicured rose gardens. Within a few more blocks eastbound, and these give way quickly to surprisingly dense deciduous forest, still mostly summer green but with hints of autumn beginning to touch the alders and maples. A break in the woods and I walk past a sizable community garden broken up into small family-sized plots full of fall vegetables. And then, a bit further into the woods, and I follow a few signs to my destination: Enkheimer Ried

Hey, wait, you’re in Germany, you can read German? Y’all, German uses the same letters as English, so it’s not exactly a huge leap to go from following signs to Schulenburg or New Braunfels in Texas to, um, following signs to original non-extra-crispy Schulenberg or Braunfels in Germany.

In retrospect, living in Texas prepared me surprisingly well for visiting Germany, with all the immigrant German culture that is deeply infused into Texas life, from the cuisine (chicken-fried steak being localized schnitzel, actually decent beer and sausage) to the pervasiveness of German names in Austin (Koenig, Dessau, Mueller).

Only, there are no Panzerschwein in Germany. Or as they would call it here, Gรผrteltier. Armadillos are indeed much safer from the Autobahn than the 130 Toll Road.

I also know my links from my rechts, despite having literally never set foot in an active German language class. Besides, what better education is there than immersion?

So, Enkheimer Ried. What is that? We already mentioned Bergen-Enkheim so that’s the locality name where we are. Ried sounds like, well, “reed”, the stuff that grows alongside a lake, and that is exactly what you see: a reed-lined lake formed by a berm protecting the residential reaches of Bergen-Enkheim to the west from the waters draining a small vale to the east, and forming a wetland lake, lined on either side by tall trees threaded by hike – bike – equestrian trails.

Yup, I flew nine hours to one of the most prominent cities in Europe and my first destination is basically the swamp, because, as I mentioned last blog, the way I recharge is through birds and this is the number one place in all of Frankfurt to see them.

It took me all of ten seconds to get a lifer (for non-birders: this is a bird I’m seeing for the first time in a lifetime): a flash of red in the trees revealed a foraging European Robin (Rotkehlchen to the locals, which of course must be pronounced like that doofy YouTube KRANKENWAGEN! meme). This being literally my first day in Europe, a high percentage of today’s birds were brand-new to me, but not all, with some birds being familiar introductions to America (European Starling, which defies the above meme by just being called Star) or also showing up in Japan (White Wagtail, Bachstelze). An impressively sized Eurasian Green Woodpecker (Grรผnspecht, and they really are that grรผn) chased off an energetic – and it turns out, embarrassingly generally named – Middle Spotted Woodpecker (Mittelspecht).

I’m just imagining old Linnaeus studying this: “It looks like it’s in between that bigger spotted woodpecker and that smaller spotted woodpecker in size, so, let’s just goldilocks this sucker.” Except in Swedish, I suppose.

A truly mid name for a very fun little bird, but at least it’s not just English where this suffers, because even the Latin name calls it medius, at least we didn’t name this thing “Medium Spotted Woodpecker” like it’s a friggin’ soft drink size.

I follow the hike – bike – equestrian trail along the lakeside, helpfully labeled “Nachtigallenweg” (“Nightingale Way”! sadly no nightingales this late in the year) and enjoy the cooling afternoon breezes in the shade of tall and aromatic noble fir trees.

Bliss.

Every so often passersby on bikes would wave. Hallo! or Guten Tag! for older folks. One older gentleman was curious as to how a clearly non-local would even find their way here, and I just pointed to my bird book and stammered out, “Ahhh, vogelbeobachtung” because the word for “birding” (birdwatching) in German is, no offense, really effing difficult for non-speakers to parse, though I definitely grew more confident with that word the more I had to use it.

It was more enough to satisfy the neighbor who smiled and nodded and wished me a “good luck with the photographs”, “there are many birds here” before we went our separate ways with a friendly “Tschรผss!” Over and over the next few days I really honestly could have just flipped back to English, but he was the first of many to seem honestly surprised I was even making the attempt since, y’know, obviously not German here with these genetics. But also, I’m here to learn, not impose my brand of Standard American English (or my California Valley Speak, or my adopted Texas Drawl) on the rest of the world.

Generally, though, I felt curiosity, not hostility, because a smile is a smile wherever you go, and people are generally going to react with “friendly” if you project “friendly”. (Not as easy when your facial default saddles you with RBF but I at least try!)

One circuit around the big pond was plenty to give me almost three dozen species (and almost 50 on the day, 21 new), a great start for my trip, since one of my goals was to see at least 150 species of birds (100 new) over the next three weeks. But also, the sun was getting lower, and my stomach was beginning to growl.

Back to the train station it was, this time through the neighborhood, and back to that “Best Dรถneria” because, when you’re in Texas, you get tacos or barbecue, and when you’re in Germany, you get currywurst or dรถner kebab. They do say hunger is the best seasoning, but whatever magical spice blend they use (paprika? cumin? marjoram? garlic? thyme? all of it?) always feels perfect, that heady mix of spice and the unctuousness of the meat and the freshness of the vegetables, a little fizz from that bottle of Mezzo Mix (basically the logical conclusion to ordering an “orange coke” anywhere but Texas) and the growl is tamed.

As night fell, I heard the echoing song of a Black Redstart (Hausrotschwanz) from the tiled rooftops, oddly reminiscent of Canyon Wrens in the rocky vastness of Arizona. An ocean away from my (rented) bed, surrounded by chatter in Deutsch and Tรผrkรงe, and yet, somehow, I was home.

All too soon, I was back in my lodgings for the night, getting ready for the next day’s international travel, and trying to forestall the inevitable jet-lag you get from a nine-hour flight, when I spied something interesting — a rare bird unlikely to be seen anywhere on my itinerary had been seen in a wetland in rural Hesse, an hour north of me.

When I had my own working vehicle (and not the sadly derelict remains of one, permanently sidelined by a trashed transmission), I would drive clear to the Mexican border and back in pursuit of rare birds. When going to Japan, I’d use trains to do the equivalent, so, hey, when in Germany, why not do that here too?

I closed my eyes, eager for the journey ahead, with an alarm set for four…

There and Back Again, Day Zero: Gateway Gardens

(September 11, 2023: Frankfurt am Main)

For years we talked about going to Europe together, but life always got in the way. We would talk about places we would visit, the friends we’d drop in to say hi to, the food we would try — but nothing would ever come to fruition. At least we had two trips to Japan together — where I realize in retrospect we weren’t good travel partners because I was too pushy and overeager, and she wanted very regimented and curated experiences., and even in our travels we found ourselves wandering apart more than we would be together. But for Europe? We didn’t have the money, and then when we didn’t have the time, and then eventually, we no longer had each other.

I was going to do this for myself, then. Why not? This was going to be my way to prove to myself I could move on, I could get by, I could be a stranger in a strange land and find myself on the other side of the planet in some weird quixotic ideal of reverse-colonialist fervor, a random Filipino-American bouncing across the European countryside, chasing rare bird alerts, hopping couches and stopping at hostels, taking my forty-four-year-old recently divorced ass across the continent in search of Dulcinea, and maybe a windmill or two to tilt.

But of course, I had to get there in the first place. See that date up there?

Yeah, folks, we’d all, of course, been holding off on everything for two long years thanks to COVID, and that meant I’d scraped up a nest egg of savings and PTO days from my social services work by assiduously masking, not spending my stray funds on avocado toast and Twitch streams or my Steam deck or whatever the hell the media tells us “elder millennials” are supposedly spending money on, and I was still completely in the weeds and trapped in Austin. Not everyone who lives in Austin realizes you can get to Europe nonstop using one of three airlines (four back in 2023), with three destinations available: Amsterdam, London, and Frankfurt. I knew I wanted the continent. I wanted quick access to the European rail network, and I also wanted to be dumped in a country where my default languages (English, Spanish, and Japanese) weren’t going to be the default.

And then a dear old friend got wind of my plans and said he had miles to burn and he would be happy to spend those miles on me.

The very first lesson of this trip, which must be addressed and acknowledged before I even set foot out the door to take the first step to Europe is that at no point in time did I do this “on my own“. Without the coworkers at my nonprofit who covered for me while I was out for three weeks, the housemates who gave me a place to stay without paying exorbitant market rent, and then many, many friends and family who encouraged me to go and do this at all and gave me so much of the time, space, and resources with which to do it — without all of them, none of this happens.

And then it’s just hurdle after hurdle and even with the ticket in hand and my rail pass booked, it still looked like this trip was doomed. My passport had expired, so I apply months out. I get my passport, but it’s a close call, just two or three weeks before the flight date. The Friday before I leave, I manage to not only get myself rear-ended on my rental e-bike (barely avoiding injury), but I lose my wallet along Town Lake on a different rental e-bike that afternoon. Somehow, Austin PD manages to contact me and I’m able to get my wallet back on Saturday, though not until most of my cards had already been cancelled. So I would have to do this trip with cash on hand and continuously shift money from my main bank account to my backup (which I had been using for DoorDash) to make anything work. Friends offer to float me small loans to get out there.

I get out to the airport. I have my backpack full of clothes and medications and travel toiletries and my BIPAP bag. I’ve got an eSim card set up. This is happening. By chance, there is a small unit temporarily based out of Austin that morning visiting from Saguenay, Quebec — a couple of sleek jets scream into the foggy Texas sky to go mock-dogfight with our air force trainees. They’re AlphaJets — a French / German collaboration.

I close my eyes, and I’m on a Lufthansa 787-9, cruising across the Atlantic. I can’t plug in my BIPAP, so I watch movies and TV shows as you do when the in-flight wifi peters out as it inevitably seems to do if you’re in economy.

I close my eyes again. We land. There are … air stairs. And a bus? What the…

Frankfurt Airport is, charitably speaking, not what I would consider an ideal welcome to Europe. Rather, it is the nightmarish chaos of lines seemingly in triplicate, full of passengers from all over the world who are panicked because half of them have to catch a flight in another terminal, at least a few of them are extra nervous because every other damn American still grouses when they have to travel on The Anniversary of That Day, and none of this is helpful when you are confronted with a byzantine array of corridors, many of which somehow manage to still not be marked in English.

Throw everything you’ve been told about “German efficiency” out the window, ’cause this ain’t any of it. I manage to find my way to the right line and get my passport stamped and also manage to get my eSim card working. At last. I can access my Eurail Pass and get out of transit hell, and after I drop off my backpack and most of my gear, it’s still mid-afternoon and I am next to delirious from sleep deprivation and jet lag, and badly in need of my daily meditation and centering.

I walk out the door of my hostel, and down a concrete path to see a small, manicured park. Gateway Gardens. Chattering away in a massive oak tree, are tiny songbirds. Eurasian Blue Tits. Great Tits. A Short-toed Tree-Creeper.

All right. There we freaking go.

And you’re right; I’m not literally trained in every language in the world. While I’ve been trained on vast amounts of text data, including multiple languages, my understanding is still limited by my programming and data sets. However, I can use machine learning algorithms to generate text in different languages, which might seem like a form of fluency. But it’s not the same as having a deep understanding of grammar, syntax, and cultural nuances that comes with native-like proficiency.

That’s a great point! As a writer, you’re already exercising your memory by recalling and putting your thoughts into words. Having the ability to learn a new skill in just 2 24 hours would be an incredible asset, especially given your creative pursuits!
Think about it: with this power, you could pick up a new instrument, master a new software tool, or even become proficient in a new language (if you wanted to supplement your existing linguistic abilities). The possibilities would be endless!

I start with games like this to get my brain working. I don’t need to unlock Ada’s creativity, she needs to unlock mine. Thinking about things that could only possibly happen are thought exercises worth doing, because your intellect requires working out just as much as your writing muscle. I think I’m going to keep talking to Ada for a while, because that last “WYR” question got me. Today, Jesus would not be executed for performing those miracles. He would never see daylight again. So, basically when I was hearing the question, I was hearing Jesus scream “TAKE THE SMARTS!”

Sunday Morning, Rain is Falling

I’ve been in the office since 0600, because it’s nice and cold out here. The air conditioning is set at 76, but I think it’s cooler than that outside. I don’t think it’s even kicked in. Plus, I have a ceiling fan, which necessitates either a jacket or a bathrobe depending on time of day. It’s not so much that I’m cold, but that I don’t like the feel of the wind from the fan on my skin. It is a constant sensory issue, so I have plenty of long sleeved t-shirts to stay cool and unflustered. Last night, I fell asleep on the couch. It’s a huge overstuffed blue leather job that will SUCK YOU IN. However, it was really cold and I only had one blanket, a wool sherpa throw. So, I’d get under it and get too hot, then throw it off and freeze. It was special. I finally went upstairs and changed pajamas (wet with sweat) and tried to sleep a little longer in my bed. No dice. The couch was already so comfortable that I slept in until 0600. Now, I’m hydrating with a punch I made from a sugar free berries and hibiscus aguafresca I got off Amazon and some lime zest. I generally wait to have my coffee until I’ve had lots of water first. Being dehydrated is most of the reason I think I need caffeine in the morning. I still do, I just need a lot less than I thought., because caffeine doesn’t help you hydrate and that’s what’s making you feel sluggish.

I took a break to make an eight-cup pot of Cafe Bustelo, because making it mug by mug often leaves a lot of grit in the bottom that a paper filter will catch. Normally, I drink it with whole milk, but today it’s black because I ran out of milk last night making macaroni and cheese. However, Cafe Bustelo is delicious black. It’s not like I feel like I’m missing something. If I did feel like that, Bryn and Dave left some CoffeeMate here. Ironically enough, I think it works better in strong black tea. That’s the only reason it’s not gone already.

I’m sure they use milk in the UK, but to me CoffeeMate is superior in tea because it doesn’t cool it down. It also doesn’t fundamentally change the taste of the tea, and I think it does fundamentally change the flavor of coffee. It makes black tea sing, and it makes coffee taste cheap. Therefore, I love it in Folgers and Maxwell House because it doesn’t make as much of a difference if the coffee is cheap as well….. or maybe I’m just more likely to adulterate it in that situation, who knows? In fact, I should get a can of Folgers to make cheap summer coffee. Cheap summer coffee is perfect for flavored creamers, because I don’t know about you, but I keep my favorite coffees unadulterated. Coconut coffee creamer was made for Folgers with ice.

And frankly, all coffees taste better if you make them perfectly. By “perfect,” I mean in measurements. Be exacting. For me, it’s taking the time to create a level tablespoon of coffee per cup. Cafe Bustelo is an espresso roast, so this is incredibly satisfying. It’s just so beautiful and smooth. I have converted David. I don’t get a toaster when I make people gay, I get a toaster when I sell Cafe Bustelo and Jonna Mendez’s books, mostly because they are a great combination. Cafe Bustelo is almost as smooth as Jonna Mendez. It’s trying hard. I still haven’t finished “In True Face,” because I thought I would be done with it by the time the museum closed, but I’m having more fun stopping and starting, getting lost in her world for a little while, then returning to my own and digesting what I have just heard. I hear her differently than most people, having friends like Zac. It has slowed down my willingness to be in that world 24/7, because I don’t have any security clearances. Therefore, no one can tell me anything that would make it more specific and less scary.

For instance, when Zac travels, I am not always allowed to know where he is going. I am not allowed EVER to publish where he’s going. Sometimes if Zac is comfortable with it, I can say he’s out of town on temporary duty and leave it at that. But it’s a “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?” sort of relationship because that motherfucker can rock heels and earrings better than me. Just one of the benefits of dating a queer man with red hair that sets EVERYTHING off. He’s such a clothes horse. Zac and I don’t live together, so one of the ways we check in is that he sends me a picture of himself in his car as he’s leaving for work (or standing next to his motorcycle/bicycle). I get to see his outfit and tell him he looks pretty. ๐Ÿ˜‰ My favorites are the pictures where he’s wearing “my glasses.” It was actually his glasses frames that inspired me to start calling him “Smiley,” because they were the type of frames I imagined George Smiley would wear.

George Smiley is John le Carre’s main character if you’re lost- le Carre used to work at MI-6, and Smiley is an MI-6 operative, the perfect fictional character to represent someone who works with all our intelligence agencies, not just one. Let’s be clear, though. Zac collects data through servers. He is not an operative, nor does he work for a three letter. The three letters are his clients, not the other way around. That’s how he was able to get into the gift shop at Langley.

Zac is on the brain because his brother and sister-in-law just had a baby. So, he’s now Uncle Zac for the first time in his life and the pictures are so gorgeous. I have also been Uncle Leslie for the last 15 or so years because my ex-girlfriend and her partner’s daughter called me that once and I’ve never lived it down because I love it so, so much. As in, I have never WANTED to live it down. I like it because even though in the UK, Leslie is a male name, in the US it comes out as male/female, the perfect representation of me to a child. “Uncle Leslie” is me to any child, because I have the reflexes of a mom when a kid is hurt, but I want to throw a kid around like a dad, too.

I actually opened up to Supergrover about this the other day, that what really stopped my baby dreams was my mother dying. I realized how little it mattered to me to have children if she was never going to meet them. I feel this way about dating moms, too. That I will totally date moms and STILL feel like it’s a shame that my mother is not there to see my stepkids. She would have LOVED being a grandmother to Sam’s kids, because Sam’s kids are basically me. Both BRIGHT musicians vocally and instrumentally. I know that she would have loved any child I brought home, but bringing her grandchildren with whom she could do duets? Get the fuck out of here. I, with no shame attached or involved, wanted to be with Sam because she reminded me of my mother, but not in any way that was creepy. They had the same personality professionally. Sam was a church choir director and a singer in the Army. My mother was a church choir director and an elementary school music teacher. It was a way of keeping that part of me alive, the one that’s deeply connected to singing……. because the universe gave me someone with whom I could do duets, too.

I was so miserable when we broke up, because as Bryn so aptly summarized, she “busted my fairy tale.” I invested too much, too fast because I missed my mother so much. However, if your partner feels like dreams for the future are threatening, then they’re not the person for you. Just like with Supergrover, I wasn’t expecting everything to come together in 15 minutes. I was checking out the future to see what it would look like. I get uncomfortable in chaos, and tend to unravel.

That being said, Sam created her own chaos and then couldn’t hack it. She failed me, and I will not apologize for saying so. I met her a week after I scheduled my first date with Zac. I told her this during our first conversation. That we would need to discuss boundaries because if she was monogamous, I would cancel the date with Zac because I didn’t want anything to mess up this relationship. I knew that the relationship with Zac would be casual, and with Sam, the universe was trying to tell me something. Neither one of us listened. She told me that she was just getting started with her business, trying to get it off the ground. That she didn’t want to picture me sitting at home waiting for her all the time. So please, go out with Zac. I am too busy to be a full-time girlfriend. She kept up that facade until after Zac picked me up at the Metro three weeks later, then broke up with me while I was at his house.

People do not say what they mean.

I don’t know what she thought I was going to do that was negative. Maybe she thought I’d call off the date in theory, but date him on the downlow so she’d always have to be worried about him. No matter what it is that she thought, it was wrong. Because I said plainly and up front “here is my situation. What do you want to do about it?” She hid her feelings until she was so frustrated she exploded at me…… and that’s how I knew it was the wrong relationship and don’t look back. It is one thing to call off a first date. It is another to tell someone you’ve been with someone for a year, so no dice on monogamy.

If she had said she wasn’t comfortable, I wouldn’t have stayed at home waiting on her. We’d have the same relationship Zac and I do now, which is staying out of each other’s way unless we’re together in person. I write A LOT. I don’t need constant stimulation from my partner. In fact, that was a huge problem in being married to Dana (absolutely no shade, she was my sweetheart and a beloved one at that…. a practical problem, not a dealbreaker). Being married to an extrovert is not my jam. But here’s the secret.

It’s all an act. Dana is extremely shy. She will give you all her canned responses and you will love her to bits….. but you’re not really invited in until you see Dana in her silence. You don’t know Dana until you’ve seen her in a situation where she has run out of canned responses. That’s why it took me so long to fall in love with her. I had to get past the mask, a recurring theme in my life.

The truth that Dana is lovely and also it’s hard coming home to an extrovert can both exist in the same universe. Our relationship got so much better when I moved into the spare room, because then she could be extroverted while on the phone or something and I could escape to a room where the door locked. I learned during this time that it’s all about sensory deprivation for me. And in fact, I do not know whether Supergrover is shy and/or introverted in person, but I do know that it was easier coming home to the sensory deprivation chamber of writing to her than it was doing all the social masking of living with an extrovert. That is not a slam on my ex-wife, just a practical reality thing. It is hard work keeping up with an extrovert.

In case that was confusing, “shy” means you don’t want to talk to people. “Introverted” means you don’t have the energy for it whether you like the person or not.

I fall into the latter category, because I am very funny and engaging when my social battery is full, and it usually is because I don’t go out and do things very much. I spend so much time alone that when I actually do go out, meeting people is exciting and not draining. I have the most fun with my Uber drivers, because they’re usually from Ethiopia or someplace equally exotic and we end up talking about faraway places for the entire ride. I owe my love of Ethiopia to the opera AIDA and to Uber. Hearing so much about Ethiopia has convinced me I must go there.

Although Africa is another continent I wouldn’t want to visit without Zac…. some countries, anyway. I would need him a lot more in Uganda than South Africa, and because he’s queer, it’s not just protection for me. I hope that Zac and I do eventually get to travel. We’ve been talking about going to New York for months (it’s not that far, maybe four hours, and we can stay on the base so it’s a cheap vacation). Neither of us has put any legwork into it, though. That’s because we both let things drop and I don’t think that there is anything better about dating Zac than going to his house and also getting to see Oliver, who is a dog. When I think about Oliver, New York pales in comparison.

But there’s all kinds of rules in poly that have to be followed regarding vacations, too. It’s a balance, right? Like, you have your own full-fledged relationship, but there’s no need to have one partner that goes everywhere with you while the rest stay at home. Of course the ones left behind are going to be jealous. All of that gets spread out, too. One of the truisms in poly is that sometimes you see the same movie five times without saying anything. ๐Ÿ˜›

So, I ended up in a poly relationship because Zac is poly, not because I didn’t want monogamy with Sam. I haven’t sought out more partners with Zac because I find that I don’t have time for more than him right now, anyway. I have my own life to figure out, and in a lot of cases, it’s hard as shit. It’s embarrassing to be my age and not feel like you’ve really launched, while at the same time having adoring fans all over the world who tell me I’m absolutely brilliant.

Sometimes, though, I need to give myself a break and believe the people who say I’m brilliant. I have certainly spent enough time thinking about the people who sum me up as a loser….. because most of the time, “loser” is code for autistic. Neurotypical people do not like neurodivergent people, but it’s not malicious because they don’t know what it is they’re reacting to…. and it’s impolite to say that you don’t like autistic people, so you describe their behaviors. Scatterbrained comes up the most. I am starting to think that I was misdiagnosed in college, that I am not sure where the line between autism and ADHD falls. There are too many similarities, but what I can say is that the reason I’m not sure where the line falls is that sometimes stimulants force me into hyperfocus and sometimes they make it where I can’t sit down.

Cafe Bustelo is a blessing and a curse depending on what morning it is, but I’m starting to count the days when I can feel the difference between ADHD and autism. It’s alarming/cool how quickly I can tell which processing disorder is driving the bus within 10 minutes of my morning coffee.

Autistic me hates coffee. ADHD me loves it.

Everywhere That Doesn’t Find a Big Mouth Offensive

What countries do you want to visit?

I want to see every country in the world where my blog wouldn’t be seen as a threat… and I even want to visit those, just not as much as the ones who will accept me as is. For China, I’d have to bank up entries in advance so it didn’t look like I was gone, then not write anything until I got home. It would be the same in the Middle East, it’s just not a monolith like China. How much what you say gets you in trouble varies by country. Iran and Qatar are not the same.

I’d like to go back to France, because I’ve only seen Paris for a few days, no Marseilles or Lyon. I’d like to go back to the UK because I’ve spent eight days there in 46 years. I believe I could learn a bit more than that. Plus, I’ve only been to England and would like to see a football game in Wrexham, Wales plus have friends in Scotland to round out a whole UK experience.

Plus, I’ve only seen London- it would be nice to get to The Cotswolds, Bath, Manchester, Liverpool, and all the other marvelous places I’ve seen on Doctor Who. They might go to every time and every place, but England is home base, kind of like I never want to move from DC, but I’d like to go and experience other places/cultures.

It’s especially more possible now because I have a boyfriend. There are certain countries I’d like to visit where not having a male chaperone is inadvised. For instance, I’d love to explore Iran and Syria. That culture is simply not available to me as a single woman traveling alone. The homophobic part of it is that I have to say “boyfriend” for this to be true. Two women traveling together are just as equally invisible. I recognize my privilege and am calling it out. I am also not giving Zac more credit for anything he does as a boyfriend that’s better than anything my girlfriends have ever done for me. His value in this case is in that government’s eyes, not mine. I feel it is an acceptable use of heterosexual privilege, to be able to navigate countries in which you wouldn’t as queer. Plus, Zac is as queer as I am. They don’t have to know that. It’s for his safety as well.

Heterosexual privilege protects us both, it’s just not fake because we’re pansexual. We’re not putting on a show to be something we’re not because we are genuinely a couple. It just sucks that we get something our friends in homosexual relationships don’t. Using it inside the US is absolutely abhorrent. Walking through Iran unnoticed? Sensible vacation planning.

I don’t know if Zac wants to go back to the Middle East or whether he’s had all the fun he can take. But what I do know is that I wouldn’t feel comfortable going without him. There’s another layer at work, and it’s not just having heterosexual privilege. It’s that Zac has actually spent time in MENA before, and I’m a complete newbie. I don’t think he’d count himself as having lived in the Middle East, because he’s in the Navy. He’s mostly been on the ships. But enough experience to know “ok, we’re fine” and “okay, we’re fucked” based on facial expressions.

I’ve said for a number of years that I’d like Arabic language skills, but I haven’t gotten on Duolingo yet. Going to the Middle East is intimidating when you want to know as much as I do. When you want to be able to grok it on multiple levels. For me, it’s walking the Bible. It’s intelligence since 9/11. It’s seeing what my friends in the military saw when they lived there. It’s eating their food when they were outside the wire.

Because so many of my friends have been military/intelligence or a combination thereof, going to the Middle East is not just learning about me. It is also learning about them. Picking up context clues I wouldn’t have gotten otherwise.

Walking the Bible, yes, but adding these additional books.

Oh, The Places I Would Go…

What cities do you want to visit?

I don’t have one top favorite, so I’ll give a few of them. I’m not a huge traveler, so I would rather get an AirBnB for several weeks than try to flip body clocks twice in three or four days. Just not my style anymore. “I’m older and I have more insurance.” But if money were no object, I would love to see:

  • Paris
    • I have been to Paris once, but only for a few days. I definitely hit all the highlights with my dad, but I don’t know what it is to sit at a cafe and people watch. I don’t know what it’s like to go to Paris and do nothing, and that’s why it’s valuable. You don’t go there to find things to do. You go there to walk around in its culture and see what sticks. Then, you either commit yourself to finding out what coffee shop David Sedaris frequents- or perhaps going to Pere Lachaisse for inspiration. Oscar Wilde and I had a marvelous time. Just because I am living and he is not doesn’t mean we weren’t both entertained. I told him that Stephen Fry played him in a movie once. He said it was perfect casting.
  • New York
    • I have never spent more than 24 hours in New York, so it’s the same idea there as in Paris. I’d like to go there for a little bit and then get back out. There’s a rhythm, and it’s intimidating to me. It’s sort of like Las Vegas in that the culture is different but the level of sensory input you receive when you get there is just as heightened. In 2003, I wanted to retire in New York, and I have absolutely no idea what I meant by that. I do remember past trips there to be fun, but not in a way I’d like to live there- except maybe someone I liked wanted to live there, so I did, too. Now, I just want to find hidden treasures on out of the way side streets.
  • Ho Chi Minh City
    • I have to do a lot of research on the Vietnam War, rightfully called “The American War” there. I’m writing a novel about it, and I don’t think I could do setting justice if I just made it up. I mean, I can and I will,if I have to, but there’s a lot to be said about putting effort into understanding something fully. I have studied political science since I got to college- the news junkie in me drove me to poli sci and it hasn’t given up. With political science comes lots and lots on international relations as well. So, I know the story from the American side fairly well, but I don’t like to write from the perspective of only trumpeting American interests. The military and C/DIA had many faults and failures during this time, and since most things more recent than Vietnam are still classified, I don’t know that either organization has really wrestled with our actions in that theater in a way that processes out institutional pain. Vietnam was the first war in which it was clear that we might not lose, but we don’t have enough money or resources to outright win, either. The Vietnamese have the right to call us out on that, because American soldiers were responsible for a lot of atrocities. We have the reputation of being feared, and not in a healthy way. It’s why we’ll never win a land war in Asia……. and death is on the line.
  • Seoul
    • Before I started watching both Josh & Olly, I’d never wanted to visit Korea before. They’re responsible for making a lot of people feel that way on their YouTube channel, Jolly. Josh met Olly in college (I think- British system), then went to university in Seoul. I think. I haven’t done all the math. Anyway, when Josh and Olly were both done with uni, they decided to start making videos about what Koreans think of English people. Hilarity ensues. I’m not sure how often Josh and Olly get back to Korea, but one of the fun things they do is “red carpet” style interviews while they entice celebrities to talk using Korean food. It worked very well on Ryan Reynolds. ๐Ÿ™‚
  • Enseรฑada, Mexico
    • I have been to Enseรฑada once. It’s a small enough city that I could picture myself living there. I don’t speak much Spanish, but I took two years in school and have spent time in both Texas and Mexico speaking Spanish. My language skills aren’t as good now as they were in high school, because I was going to Mexico regularly (Reynosa and Progreso, both on mission trips). I could not land in San Diego and drive across the border without incident, but within a month or so I’d be all right. Within three or four years, I’d be fluent. It’s amazing what you can do when you have no choice. The water is gorgeous. La Buffadora (Buffalo Snort) is magnificent, a geyser that makes me feel the power of nature unlike anything else. I’m sure Papas & Beer is still there, it’s an institution. I don’t know about Habana Banana, which used to be my favorite Mexican clothing brand. I bought a ton while I was there, and at the time, they didn’t offer online ordering or international shipping. So, part of it is to find another clothing brand I like just as much…….. the rest of it is to sit outside with a Coke (we’re in Mexico, after all) and see what nature is saying around me. I live my life like the sound track is 4’33. I think it would kick things up a notch to perform it outside. My past performances have all gone very well. No one even knew I was “conducting it all while I sleep…. to light up my yard.”

    • I didn’t live in DC very long before I went to visit Meagan in Ottawa. However, I lived in Portland for 12 years and never made it to British Columbia. I have heard I would love it, now I need to go see it for myself. I will admit, though, that there is some truth to only the Canadian provinces with her in them being interesting. It wasn’t a draw while I lived there, but now I’m just curious. I sort of know what life is like on the East Coast of Canada because Meag has lived in Alberta, Ontario, and New Brunswick….. maybe more, but I’ve slept since then. But West Coast Canada is completely different, it seems. They don’t have bagged milk there. ๐Ÿ™„ Now that I’ve had time to reflect, I regret not going when it was only a five hour car ride. It would be a much bigger deal now.

    • I live in Silver Spring, Maryland. It’s a suburb that has everything I could possibly want within walking distance. As a result, I can go as long as a year without needing anything from downtown…… and most of it is that the bands I like don’t play in Silver Spring- some of them do, though. If I want to see something relatively big, it’s at The Kennedy Center, not The Fillmore. I also haven’t been to Wolf Trap in 20-odd years, mostly because it’s such a hassle that I think about going to Wolf Trap and back out. I feel about Wolf Trap the same way people feel about Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. It’s going to be a long concert, there’s no easy way in or out, and there’s a thousand people all screaming at once. I much prefer smaller venues, and wish Indigo Girls would play The Fillmore once in a while. ๐Ÿ˜›
  • Helsinki
    • My love of Finnish Independence Day led me to believe that one day I’d make it to watch the celebrations live- I watch them every year on YouTube from here. It’s not just that, though. I’ve said before and I’ll say it again that the palate for that part of the world is completely different- they don’t even have the same flora. Learning to cook there would be a whole new experience, and Anthony Bourdain introduced them to me through the magic of television. Why yes, I do want a large reindeer pizza. I also want to fly into HEL and drive up to Kilpisjaarvi so I can sleep under the aurora borealis in a clear-top tent. I also want to dress up really warm and sleep outside, just to see if I could do it. ๐Ÿ˜›

With Whom?

Describe your most memorable vacation.

Describing my most memorable vacation is hard because I’d have to pick between my childhood and taking vacations with partners. To say that there isn’t a story that takes the cake is incorrect. Here is the story of the first time I got married. I hope I made it sound as funny and terrible as it really was……… we just needed health insurance….. famous last words of all couples who have been together for a while and say “what the hell?” The only reason you get a link to this entry is that you *really* couldn’t find it unless you were dedicated to swallowing Stories whole. I posted it for the first time on Clever Title in 2005.

With others, there are snippets, like having fried dill pickles at BB King’s in Memphis with my family. It’s something that is commonplace today, but they blew my little kid mind. I also remember having bright yellow lemon ice cream on Beale Street, as cool and refreshing in my mind today as it was 30 odd years ago.

I remember coffee at Cafe du Monde, like everyone does, but I’m not sure all people think it should be a religion. All things being equal, I think Bryn and I could live in New Orleans quite easily. I should ask her. Moving isn’t a thing with me anymore because I’ve realized I’m using the Internet wrong. I can totally get a house in New Orleans for two weeks or a month via Air BnB.

I’m never talking about moving permanently, because I have friends that have worked at oil companies for longer than I’ve been alive who’ve lived all over the world for a few months at a time. For instance, I wouldn’t want to get a hotel and rent a car in Helsinki. I’d want to put down roots and make home base, even i it was only ten days……. keeping in mind that I have absolutely no idea how to make friends in Finland because everyone is like me. None of them want to be here, either.

It’s only a shell, though. I’ve watched so many videos of people moving to Helsinki (it’s *fascinating* when they’re POC). Finns are the nicest, kindest, sweetest people and also gaurded af if they don’t know you. Same. Hilarity ensues.

Helsinki is a vacation I want to take, though, and not a memorable one from the past.

Again, I’m not sure my “wedding” could beat anything I’d write today. It’s Saturday morning, and I’m trying to figure out how to use Threads effectively (and by that I mean I’m doomscrolling and need to eat).

Eleven Dollars

When I decided that DC was my home, I packed up my car and left Texas behind. I’d secured a room in a house in Silver Spring that was already furnished, and I just took enough clothes for a week. Anything else that I needed from my parents’ house could be mailed. That’s what we did. For months on end, I received boxes that contained things I’d forgotten about. If I asked for one thing, the box still came full, because it was a waste of space not to pack it full. It was going to be $11 either way. It became a running joke between my dad and meโ€ฆ. “you’re moving $11 at a time.” One box would have boots in it, and then a purse I hadn’t used since 2003 and a half-tube of Chapstick (that I still have and it is still delicious, thank youโ€ฆ. it’s cherry.) If I wanted something, I accepted the randomness that came with it. The $11 box never changed, but the value of the contents were never the same total.

I’m in that relationship right now, a friendship that I want to grow to be as big as anything in my life. At this point, I can’t tell you what that means. I just know that Daniel has been my friend since second grade, and some of the countries I want to visit would shit a brick at me traveling alone, or see me as traveling alone anyway if I brought the woman I was dating. You can’t just walk up to someone you haven’t known since second grade and say, “I really want to go to the Middle East, Viet Nam, and Cambodia. I am a woman first of all and a lesbian second. You don’t happen to want to travel, do you?”

My friend Gabriel already lives in Cambodia and I just dropped a truth bomb on him, too. “My work in progress is set in Viet Nam. Can I come live with you for a few months? I have some work I need to do locally.” Gabriel said that he wasn’t in Viet Nam anymore, he was in Cambodiaโ€ฆ. but I am absolutely welcome to come and live in Cambodia. I’m thinking 90 day visa because three months seems like a reasonable amount of time to do research and come home, and that way I can probably afford to do it more than once.

Where Daniel comes into the picture is always travel companion, sometimes bodyguard. I do not mean that I am hiring him to be friggin’ Liam Neeson. His Texas accent’s too strong for that. I also don’t need him to fight anyone. I just need him to stand there and look big.

For that, I will absolutely treat him like a king.

But as a single lesbian, I’m muddling through what that means. How do you treat your friends the right way so that they feel taken care of and the relationship isn’t a one-way street? I know that if I was paying Daniel for his services I couldn’t afford it. The best thing I could do is just make sure I can take care of his basic needs.

The best thing I can do is wait to start traveling until I know my situation with my inheritance. If my stepfather leaves money for me in his will, my financial situation will turn right side up in one day. There is no reason to believe that he wouldn’t. He has said as much, that I would get money that clearly only belonged to her. All I am saying is that if he is not an honest man, it is an enormous financial hit for me.

I am not worried about being rich. My mother wasn’t rich, but she invested well, and so did the insurance companies where she had policies. I do not have any pipe dreams about being rich. The only thing I have ever wanted out of money is stability. If you read the studies, there’s no percentage in acquiring more than that. I will be happy with my own house, car, and a bit of land. Nothing haughty. I’d like to build with plain 2x4s, rockwoool insulation, and triple-paned windows. I want to choose the materials I would like to use in my house, and price the house by them. I would much rather have a very small house capable of lasting a hundred years than a house where everything starts going wrong the minute the new wears off. In essence, the relationship I want to build with Daniel…. made of such strong stuff that it’s even better when the new wears off. As book lovers, we know exactly how much love it takes to keep a relationship going. We’ve read The Velveteen Rabbit. Let’s not get stupid.

For us, the process of becoming real to each other is heart-wrenching and necessary. I’m bipolar and have been hospitalized for it. He has other health issues that are different in origin and the same in behavior. We present the same, but we’re so different.

Daniel and I also have a lot in common, and have since we were children. He was my first boyfriend in elementary school because we were the nerdy English lovers. If I could give you an image from literature, he’s not a preacher’s kid, but he is very much like Norman from “A River Runs Through It.” I don’t mean that in a romantic, fly fishing sort of way. I mean that he is perfectly capable of being a novelist’s friend and told me I have free reign to say whatever I want about him here.

Daniel, it feels like after all these years, parts of me are moving back to youโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ.. eleven dollars at a time. If you want me, accept all the randomness that comes with it.
