I Choose You

Interview someone — a friend, another blogger, your mother, the mailman — and write a post based on their responses.

If someone comments, I’ll interview you and the comment section will become the entry. This is not a daily prompt. This is “take it away and think about it.” LAME.

      1. I wish I could give you a big blue ribbon. I’ve already asked you my standard “Authentic British Person” question, “who’s your Doctor?” After that, I’m kind of tapped out. 😉 Digestives with chocolate or without? Smarties or M&Ms? Jam or marmalade? Now we’re asking the real questions. 😉

      2. Wow all the important questions!
Digestives, without chocolate. A superior dunking device than the chocolate counterpart (the chocolate coating is not a really good chocolate anyway). Incredibly versatile to be paired with different drinks and can be use for no-bake cheesecakes base in the kitchen. And if you are on a diet, definitely lower calories, and not too sweet.
M&M’s. Peanut one. I feel sorry for anyone with peanut allergy because peanut is definitely one of the yummyest thing to be paired with chocolate. BUT, the ALDI dupe of M&M’s is much better in my opinion, and cheaper too.
I rarely use jam or marmalade, they are really sweet. I am more a chocolate spread or peanut butter person. But if the option is jam or marmalade, it is going to be jam. Chilli jam goes really well with grilled haloumi.

      3. Interestingly enough, I just pan fried some haloumi today. You are also the first British person I’ve met who likes peanut butter, but I’m guessing that’s because you’re not originally from the UK. I could be very wrong because I don’t live there, but I have many British friends and few are fans. I prefer Smarties to plain M&Ms, but you are correct. Peanut is superior. Also, I could have written that paragraph on digestives. It’s like we have one brain. Mostly because our training dictates that of course we do. Also, digestives as cheesecake crust? INSPIRING. P.S. I cannot think of chili jam at all without thinking of Uncle Roger taking down Jamie Oliver on YouTube.

      4. As a peanut enthusiast, I think it is only natural that I like peanut butter better than jam, but now that we are talking about something we can spread on toast, I remember one other jam that I actually wholeheartedly like. Kaya jam. It is popular in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. It is called jam, but it is more like a… dunno, thicker, yummier Asian cousin of custard/curd? It involves egg(yolk), coconut milk(cream), palm sugar, and pandan leaves.
But, back to peanut butter, I prefer sugarless, crunchy peanut butter than smooth one. In a pinch, it can be used to make my favourite peanut sauce/dressing for many Indonesian food.
I am not a big fan of orange (clementines, tangerines etc) or citrus in general, so it is really difficult for me to like marmalades, or even lemon curd. Personally. Citrus is best when combined with poultry dishes, or maybe fish. Dessert… not so much.

I knooow it is so interesting to have someone to talk about this. Not everyone interested about food the way I do. Like yes they like eating it, and they have favourites, but they cannot verbalise why and how something is better than the other, for example. How weird!

      5. I can get with not liking marmalade, but lemon curd? Seriously? Your culinary education is so much worse than I thought. 😉 Kidding, of course. I love a good strawberry shortcake with lemon curd. I love Mexican food, so I tend to use lime A LOT, particularly in chicken marinades. I buy plain, crunchy peanut butter as well. How ELSE do you make a peanut butter and Sriracha sandwich?

I will have to order some kaya jam. I’m sure I can get it from Amazon….. or, if I *can* get it, it will be from there. I’ve gotten red tea imported from S Africa for cheap. That was another literary find. The ladies are addicted to it at the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency, a brilliant book and even got a limited series on HBO.

      6. I brought tons of cheap Indonesian tea every time I come home, from reputable source so I know it is not mixed with random tea branches -_- A lot of Indonesian household still blend their own tea with these tea, but this is a dying craft. But giving a nod to Alexander McCall Smith can’t go wrong 😀
Isn’t there any Asian food store in DC? Something like in Chinatown or something? Asian food store is like an Aladdin Cave full of wonder 😀

Oooh! I actually don’t know much about Mexican food. I don’t think I can name one proper Mexican restaurant in Norwich. I know a couple of chain restaurant, but not sure it is going to be a gateway to a new culinary experience, or put me off completely 😮

      7. OMG. Duh Leslie. Of course there’s an Asian Market in CHINATOWN. I am so dense this morning. Please forgive me. 😛 If you want to learn how to cook Mexican food, check out Pati Jinich. She’s a PBS chef that I absolutely adore, but I’m sure you can get clips of her on YouTube, or I can tell you how to set up your computer to play it via streaming (there’s a Kodi plugin for live PBS in every state, and if it doesn’t work for you, you can get a VPN for very cheap and change your location to DC or NYC). It’s a lot of information, but Pati is the bees knees and I wouldn’t recommend anyone else.
I actually have a really cute story about Pati. My stepmom has jokingly called Pati my dad’s “girlfriend” for years. He got us tickets to go see her at a live cooking demonstration in the Mexican Embassy (Pati lives near me in Chevy Chase, MD). He canceled the day before but told me to go ahead. I said, “careful dad. I’m going to steal your girlfriend.” So, being the shameless flirt that I am, I walk up to Pati and tell her this. She laughs, and the program begins. Afterward, we take a picture together. When the photographer says “cheese,” she turns and plants a huge kiss on my cheek and then made me text it to my dad in front of her to prove he got it. The funny part is that there were several hours between the conversation and the photo, so in the picture, my face is so red I look like a tomato because I was caught so off guard. But it was worth it.
That being said, I thought Pati was incredible before she kissed me, so the recommendation is solid. 😉

  1. Also, marmalade is very much a British thing. Not a fan. However, I did like it with cheddar. I tried it because of Lisbeth Salander in “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” It looks stunning on crusty bread with white aged cheddar and crystalized rind.

    1. It sounds like a twisted cheeseboard >_< But I like strange pairing, so I might give it a try. Afterall, I like cheese and chutney, so cheese and marmalade is just another step, isn't it?

      1. Since you haven’t seen the show, that’s why you don’t know. 😂 The Kumars are a crazy Punjabi family who buy their son a $300,000 television studio so that he can host a chat show at their house. The grandmother advertises Bimla’s chutney…… sooo delicious.
