How to Save a Life

Daily writing prompt
What’s a thing you wish schools actually taught?

Schools are all about image, but there’s no class on the fundamentals:

  • how do I budget?
  • how do I cook?
  • how do I arrange travel?
  • how do I manage my interpersonal relationships?

Schools used to have a version of this called “Home Economics,” except it was geared toward women…… when I am pretty sure that men also eat when they’re alone (please advise). Nothing about Home Ec was gendered except the expectations of the people running the class. Gay men have been the unsung heroes of Home Ec since time immemorial.

But if kids don’t have these skills, parents are sending them off to school to be the world’s worst roommate. Parents send their little cherubs to college when they’ve never even done their own laundry. Especially if you are neurodivergent, this will probably end up in a dumpster fire. That is because at 18, all of the sudden you are responsible for your own life with absolutely no framework in mind as to how that happens.

I have some of the same issues that Tiina’s kids have, it’s just that I’m so old that tricks that work on kids don’t work on me. I want to prevent this from happening to other young adults, because what no one will tell you about college is that being able to go to school and being able to handle your life are two separate skills.

School barely addresses the first.
